This paper examines the role of English Language in solving reading problems in the Nigerian educational system for a sustainable development in a changing world. Being able to read well is crucially important for language learners. Successful performance at academic education is partly dependent on the ability to read. It is believed that good learners are those who are proficient in reading. However, building such a connection between a reader and the written information is complex and requires the application of various reading strategies. This paper therefore discusses the indispensability of reading, the place and importance of the English language in Nigerian education system, essential skills for reading, common reading problems, strategies for solving the reading problems and possible recommendations.
