Abstract

Recurrent intergroup violence has been a persistent issue in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA on Nigeria. To better understand the underlying causes of these conflicts, a mixed-method study was conducted from 2013 to 2023 as part of a larger research agenda examining traditional councils’ role in managing communal conflicts. The findings reveal that land grabbing, kingship issue, and disparities in educational opportunities are crucial factors fuelling ethnic tensions and violence in the region. Based on these findings, several recommendations were made to address the identified factors. Firstly, strengthening communal dispute resolution mechanisms could help to mitigate land grabbing-related conflicts. Secondly, promoting cross-ethnic dialogue and community engagement could help to build understanding and cooperation between groups. Finally, improving education infrastructure and access could minimize educational disparities and reduce tensions. These recommendations highlight the importance of a conflict resolution that considers both cultural and structural factors. The findings of this studies contribute to the existing literature on communal conflicts in Nigeria by providing a more nuanced understanding of the underlying causes of violence. In addition, the study’s mixed-method approach offers valuable insights into the complexity and dynamics of these conflicts, highlighting the need for interdisciplinary and integrated approaches to peacebuilding. The study concludes that addressing land grabbing, kingship issues, and educational disparities will be crucial in achieving sustainable peace and stability in Ado-Odo/Ota LGA and in other regions experiencing conflicts.
