Abstract

The paper dwells on state of emergency declaration in Nigerian democratic history and good governance. Its statement of problem is the politicization of the declaration of state of emergency. The methodology of qualitative and documentary led to findings that declaration of state of emergency stemming from political motivation undermines good governance as there is no legitimacy, accountability, inclusiveness, consensus, transparency, etc. The paper concludes/recommends that state of emergency declaration should strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and be depoliticized.
